June 26, 2025: The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Extension Project has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of all civil works on South Asia’s first curved cable-stayed bridge. The structure, set to play a key role in easing traffic congestion across Mumbai’s east-west corridors, is now in its final stages of preparation ahead of opening to the public.
Once operational, the bridge will provide a signal-free route from Kurla to Panbai School, located just before the airport. It is designed to facilitate seamless travel between the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and the Western Express Highway (WEH), thereby drastically improving cross-city connectivity for commuters.
Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), including Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee and Additional Metropolitan Commissioner-I Vikram Kumar, recently visited the project site to inspect the progress of the finishing works. Their visit signals the final phase of activity before the bridge is formally commissioned.
The SCLR Extension is expected to transform vehicular movement across a densely populated and frequently congested section of the city, significantly reducing travel time and improving traffic flow. Its curved cable-stayed design not only enhances the structure’s visual appeal but also addresses complex engineering challenges associated with the alignment and space constraints in this urban stretch.
As the MMRDA moves closer to completing this critical infrastructure link, the project is being seen as a major step forward in Mumbai’s broader strategy to create faster, more efficient, and future-ready transport corridors. Once inaugurated, the SCLR bridge is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, airport travellers, and logistics operators who currently face heavy delays while navigating the city’s arterial roads.
The opening of this bridge will mark a key achievement in Mumbai’s ongoing urban infrastructure transformation.
