Major Pothole Near Churchgate Yet To Be Fixed After One Month

July 1, 2025: A sizeable pothole near the Income Tax office in Mumbai’s Churchgate area has remained unattended for over a month, disrupting traffic and posing serious safety risks to motorists. The damaged stretch, located on a busy route frequented by school buses, government vehicles and daily commuters, has become a point of concern for residents and civic activists alike.

Despite a Rs 5 crore road maintenance contract allocated for the area, the crater remains unresolved. Citizens and activists had reportedly filed multiple complaints, but remedial action was only initiated after the issue drew public attention. According to activists, the road falls under the Central Roads Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which oversees Wards A to D—covering South Mumbai.

Civic sources stated the contract includes resurfacing, pothole repair, and regular maintenance across Zone-I. Yet, the ground reality suggests lapses in execution. One BMC official claimed the damage was not technically a pothole, but rather an incomplete joint-cutting job on a concrete surface that deteriorated due to recent rains.

Activists argue that such lapses are common in heritage precincts, with several joint cuts reportedly left unfilled between Churchgate and Charni Road. The current situation has particularly endangered two-wheeler riders, with minor accidents reported due to the uneven surface concealed under monsoon water.

Senior BMC officials have assured that complaints will be addressed promptly—typically overnight—to avoid traffic disruption. An internal review has been promised to investigate the delay.

Urban planners have called for more durable materials, better oversight, and sensor-based monitoring to ensure safer roads. As monsoon intensity increases, the Churchgate pothole stands as a reminder of the urgent need for improved planning, timely maintenance, and greater accountability in Mumbai’s infrastructure systems.
