BKC To Get 1.3 km Underground Pedestrian Tunnel Connecting Metro & Bullet Train Stations

July 5, 2025: Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) is set for a major connectivity boost, with plans in motion for a 1.3-kilometre underground pedestrian tunnel linking the BKC stations of Mumbai Metro Line 3 and the upcoming bullet train terminus, according to a report by The Times of India.

The tunnel aims to streamline commuter movement and provide seamless last-mile connectivity between two of the city’s most significant transit systems. The structure will be built 12 metres underground using the push box method and is expected to pass beneath the Vakola Nallah.

A 7m x 7m knockout wall at the bullet train terminal will be demolished to facilitate this linkage — a common practice in global infrastructure development.

This pedestrian corridor is especially significant for passengers carrying luggage, as it will offer direct access from the Metro Line 3 BKC station, located at the Income Tax Office (ITO) junction on Bandra-Kurla Link Road, to the bullet train terminal, which currently lacks such connectivity.

The project is designed to reduce surface-level congestion, lessen the reliance on feeder transport like taxis and autos, and ensure a safer, more convenient transfer for thousands of daily commuters.

However, it remains unclear whether travelators will be installed within the tunnel to assist passengers, particularly those with luggage or mobility concerns.

Once completed, the tunnel is expected to become a vital part of Mumbai’s multimodal transport network, enhancing accessibility and improving the commuting experience in one of the city’s busiest business districts.
