July 5, 2025: The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has initiated multiple water infrastructure projects to meet Navi Mumbai’s projected daily water demand of 1,257 million litres by 2050.
At the core of this expansion is the Hetawane Water Supply Scheme, which is progressing through four key phases. As of now, the treatment plant is 41% complete, the raw water tunnel is 8.5% finished, and the pure water tunnel has reached 25.7% completion. The entire scheme is slated for commissioning by June 2029.
In addition to these upgrades, CIDCO is also developing new water sources. The Kondhane Dam on the Ulhas River is expected to provide an initial 250 MLD, with potential expansion to 350 MLD. The Balganga Dam will complement this supply, with both projects expected to be operational within the next four to five years.
To address immediate needs, the Maharashtra Government approved an additional 120 MLD from the Hetawane Dam in August 2020, raising CIDCO’s total allocation from the reservoir to 270 MLD. This Rs 1.198 billion interim boost is aimed at ensuring short-term water security.
Officials say the combined efforts will support Navi Mumbai’s growing population and industrialisation, ensuring a sustainable and resilient water supply for decades to come.
