July 31, 2025: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday instructed officials to initiate the relocation of residents living in the vicinity of the Savitribai Phule memorial in Pune. The move is intended to facilitate the long-pending conservation and redevelopment of the culturally significant site.
The memorial, situated alongside the historic Mahatma Phule Wada in the Ganj Peth locality, is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment. The project aims to preserve the legacy of social reformers Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule while enhancing the area’s historical and cultural prominence.
Despite the state government allocating Rs 200 cr for land acquisition and associated development activities, the groundwork has not yet commenced. Addressing this delay, Pawar emphasised the urgency of initiating the relocation process to avoid further hold-ups in the project timeline.
“The Phule memorial is not just a local heritage site but a symbol of Maharashtra’s progressive social history. The redevelopment project must begin without delay, and for that, it is crucial to shift the residents currently occupying the surrounding areas,” Pawar said during a review meeting with district officials.
Officials stated that detailed surveys and rehabilitation plans are being drawn up to ensure a smooth and dignified transition for the affected families. The relocation will be carried out in phases, with provisions for alternative housing and necessary support systems.
The project has drawn attention for its potential to boost cultural tourism in Pune while paying tribute to two of India’s most revered social reformers. Once completed, the upgraded site is expected to feature a museum, public spaces, and improved infrastructure, making it a prominent landmark that honours the Phules’ enduring contributions to education and social justice.
