July 31, 2025: The proposed circuit will link three significant historical landmarks in the area—Mahim Fort, St Michael’s Church, and Mahim Dargah—along with the Mahim beach. The objective is to transform Mahim into a recreational and heritage-rich destination. “Tourists visiting Mahim Fort will have the opportunity to spend three to four hours exploring the surrounding attractions. The area offers a compelling heritage experience,” said a civic official.
While many assume that Mumbai’s historic sites are concentrated around the Fort area in South Mumbai, Mahim itself boasts several key heritage locations. All three landmarks are within a five-minute walking radius of one another, making the idea of a heritage walking circuit both feasible and attractive. “A comprehensive strategy will be developed to enhance the area’s appeal to tourists. The plan includes ensuring the neighbourhood is pedestrian-friendly and equipped with adequate public amenities,” added the official.
In parallel, the BMC’s G North ward is preparing to initiate the formal transfer of Mahim Fort from the customs department, which currently controls the site. Vinayak Vispute, Assistant Commissioner of G North ward, confirmed, “The handover process will begin shortly. Meanwhile, restoration and structural strengthening of the fort has already commenced.”
Although the BMC first undertook restoration efforts in 2021, the fort was found to be entirely encroached upon. Since then, over 200 unauthorised structures in the vicinity have been cleared, paving the way for a comprehensive restoration and tourist engagement plan.
