July 31, 2025: After more than ten years of waiting, Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital in Mumbai is set to have its own dedicated medical college building, with the state government approving a budget of approximately Rs 210.8 crore for the project. The funds will cover the construction of the college block, hostels for students, and staff quarters.
GT Hospital, which launched its first MBBS batch of 50 students last year, is currently awaiting the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) approval to increase the intake to 100 students. The new medical college building will be a 13-storey structure (ground plus 12 floors) and will be built within the existing hospital premises.
The project will necessitate the demolition of the current doctors’ quarters, which occupy around 1.5 acres. As per official estimates, the total built-up area will span 34,780.5 square metres, with the college building covering 15,609 sq m and the boys’ and girls’ hostels taking up 9,585.7 sq m each. “The building will meet all NMC requirements, and lecture halls will be large enough to accommodate 200 students if expansion is needed,” a senior medical official said.
GT Hospital has long faced issues of inadequate space. In recent years, there were discussions about converting its underused transgender ward into a specialised cardiology or nephrology unit. Officials have also urged the state government to relocate the adjacent ‘chhota mantralaya’ office building—currently registered as part of GT Hospital—so the premises can be returned for hospital use.
“Construction will take two to three years. In the meantime, we need the adjacent building to expand operations, especially as the current heritage structure imposes limitations on repair and extension,” the official added. This development is expected to significantly boost GT Hospital’s capacity as a tertiary care and teaching facility.
