BMC Accelerates Goregaon–Mulund Tunnel Project, Shaft Launching To Begin Soon

November 01, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced significant progress in the ambitious Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, which aims to connect Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs through twin underground tunnels. Excavation of the launching shaft at Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon is advancing rapidly, marking a crucial milestone in the project’s development.

In an official statement on Friday, the BMC confirmed that Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the ongoing works and directed officials to ensure timely completion. “The GMLR project will provide a crucial fourth link between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, significantly reducing travel time and traffic congestion,” Bangar said, adding that the corridor will connect Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari to Mulund and ultimately link the Mumbai Coastal Road and Malad Mindspace area to Airoli for a signal-free, congestion-free route.

The project involves constructing two parallel tunnels, each 5.3 kilometres long with three lanes. The tunnels will be excavated using two advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Components for one TBM, imported from Japan in 77 containers, have already arrived and are being assembled at Josh Maidan in Goregaon. The second TBM is expected by December 2025, with assembly to be completed by October 2026. Tunnelling is expected to begin by August 2026.

The launching shaft—200 metres long, 50 metres wide, and 30 metres deep—has reached a 10-metre excavation depth, with rock anchoring in progress to prevent wall collapse. Work is being carried out round the clock to meet the project’s December 2028 completion target.

Once complete, the twin tunnels, each with a 14.42-metre outer diameter, will stretch a total of 6.62 kilometres, making them among Mumbai’s largest and most transformative infrastructure projects.
