BDD Chawls Redevelopment Declared Vital Project To Fast-Track Completion

November 12, 2025: In a major push for Mumbai’s housing and infrastructure development, the Maharashtra government has granted vital project status to the BDD Chawls redevelopment to accelerate its pending phases and ensure timely completion. Alongside, new deadlines have been set for key Metro corridors — Metro 2B (Andheri–Mandale) by March 31, 2027, and the Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli line by December 2026.

These decisions were made during a state infrastructure “war room” meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, where 36 major projects across Mumbai, Thane, and Pune were reviewed. The CM directed departments to ensure that all major works are completed within the next two and a half years.

An official from the housing department said, “After completing the first phase at Worli, the remaining phases at Worli, Naigaon, and N.M. Joshi Marg will be expedited by granting vital project status. This ensures regular reviews, fast-tracked environmental clearances, and priority permissions for timely completion.”

The Worli BDD Chawl’s first phase — comprising 556 tenements — was handed over to residents in August 2025. The remaining Worli phase is targeted for completion by May 2029, while Naigaon and N.M. Joshi Marg phases are expected by June 2029 and June 2031, respectively.

Fadnavis also instructed authorities to complete the Worli–Sewri connector to Atal Setu by August 2026 and asked the MMRDA to resolve land issues affecting the Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli line within 15 days.

Other projects reviewed include the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel, Uttan–Virar sea link, and the Orange Gate–Marine Drive urban tunnel. The CM further directed MMRDA to release funds for the Airoli–Katai Naka Freeway and ensure completion of the Vadpe–Thane road by March 2026, linking to the Samruddhi Expressway.
