Konkan Railway Achieves Record Growth In Passenger Traffic, Safety & Services

The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has reported a standout year, marked by significant progress in connectivity, passenger services, and safety initiatives across the Konkan region. The developments highlight its growing importance as a key component of India’s railway network.

During the last financial year, KRCL recorded its highest-ever ticket checking revenue of Rs 27.59 crore, alongside a notable rise in passenger traffic. The corporation also introduced the Dev Darshan Special Train, operating six Full Tariff Rate (FTR) services connecting major pilgrimage destinations such as Ranjangaon, Ayodhya, and Rameshwaram.

Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha said, “This year’s achievements reflect our commitment to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ through world-class rail infrastructure, in alignment with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision.”

Infrastructure and technology upgrades
KRCL marked a major milestone with the completion of the USBRL project, enhancing national connectivity. The corporation upgraded several bridges, tunnels, and signalling systems to improve safety and operational efficiency in the region’s challenging terrain. Freight movement also became more efficient, with RoRo carrying capacity increased from 50 MT to 57 MT. At Madgaon station, operational improvements were made by extending the Road-6 line for locomotive reversal. Additionally, drone-based track monitoring was introduced to minimise maintenance downtime.

Passenger-focused initiatives
The railway operated over 1,400 special train services, including those for Ganpati, summer, winter, and other occasions. Accessibility for Divyangjan passengers was enhanced through ramps, Braille signage, and improved display boards at stations such as Karmali, Thivim, Karwar, Murdeshwar, and Udupi.

Station amenities were also upgraded, with executive and AC lounges added at 10 stations, Rail Arcade facilities introduced at Sawantwadi Road and Ratnagiri, and Digi Locker services launched at Ratnagiri, Thivim, and Udupi. Infrastructure improvements included new foot over bridges, high-level platforms at Kumta and Gokarna, and upgraded platform surfaces and shelters at Surathkal, Udupi, and Mulki.

Safety and sustainability efforts
KRCL generated 3.67 lakh kWh of solar energy, saving Rs 45.94 lakh. Safety measures included installing 2,700 metres of cattle fencing and expanding CCTV surveillance across 10 stations. Authorities also registered 92 theft cases, recovering assets worth Rs 35.73 lakh, and rescued 90 runaway children.

Community engagement
During the Ganpati festival, KRCL set up decorative stalls, Yatri Sahayak booths, and offered free water, healthcare support, and cultural programmes by local artists. Awareness initiatives also reached 730 school students.

With a continued focus on safety, efficiency, and passenger convenience, KRCL reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening connectivity and enhancing the travel experience across the region.
