The proposed Kharghar Coastal Road is set to play a key role in improving connectivity across Navi Mumbai while enhancing access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Planned along the Panvel Creek, the 9.678-km corridor is estimated to cost around Rs 1,020 crore and is positioned as a strategic addition to the city’s transport network, aimed at supporting growing commercial activity and traffic movement.
Currently under development, the project is being executed in two phases. The first stretch will connect Kharghar to CBD Belapur, while the second will extend from CBD Belapur to the Nerul Water Transport Jetty. The alignment is set to begin at Jalmarg in Sector 16, Kharghar, pass near the PAY Housing Scheme close to Kharghar railway station, continue through Sector 15 in CBD Belapur, and terminate near DPS Nerul. Construction is being undertaken by J Kumar Infraprojects, with a targeted completion timeline of 2028.
Urban planners indicate that the road has been designed with an emphasis on limiting environmental impact, particularly on mangroves and the creek ecosystem. It will also integrate with major arterial routes such as the Sion-Panvel Highway, while connecting residential neighbourhoods and upcoming commercial centres, including the International Corporate Park in Kharghar.
The City and Industrial Development Corporation has initiated the relocation of electrical utilities that were obstructing the project alignment, with work beginning in March.
Once completed, officials expect the corridor to significantly reduce travel time between Kharghar, CBD Belapur and Nerul, while improving daily commutes. The route is projected to cut travel time to the airport to around 15 minutes from several parts of Navi Mumbai, offering a major boost to regional accessibility. Authorities note that construction progress is ongoing, with timely utility relocation and execution milestones crucial to meeting deadlines.
