Mumbai Cracks Down On Illegal Shops In Dongri, Clears Encroachments To Ease Congestion

Mumbai’s civic administration has stepped up action against unauthorised commercial activity in crowded inner-city areas, conducting a focused clearance drive in Dongri that removed several illegal structures. The move is part of a wider effort to reclaim public spaces and improve pedestrian movement in one of the city’s most densely packed neighbourhoods.

As part of the latest anti-encroachment operation, officials demolished nine незаконно constructed shops situated along a key arterial road and nearby lanes in Dongri. Authorities said these structures had significantly reduced the already limited width of footpaths and road margins, impacting both mobility and safety for residents. The drive also targeted shop extensions that exceeded permitted limits, along with the removal of signboards and obstructions placed on roads for informal parking.

Multiple civic departments worked together during the operation, with police support ensuring that the exercise was carried out smoothly. Officials emphasised that such actions are becoming increasingly necessary in high-density zones, where commercial activity frequently spills into public areas due to limited formal retail infrastructure and strong demand for visibility.

Urban planners point out that while enforcement plays a crucial role, repeated encroachments highlight deeper systemic issues. In neighbourhoods like Dongri, where mixed land use is prevalent and space is scarce, many small businesses function informally due to a shortage of affordable and regulated commercial spaces. This often leads to a cycle where cleared areas are gradually reoccupied.

The drive also included action against unauthorised street vendors and temporary installations that obstruct pedestrian movement. Authorities stated that restoring access to public infrastructure is especially important for pedestrians, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

Officials have indicated that similar drives will continue across Mumbai. However, experts stress that long-term solutions must combine enforcement with inclusive planning to address the root causes of such urban challenges.
