The Maharashtra Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has issued a notice to the Goud Saraswat Brahmin Temple Trust over alleged violations at the historic Banganga Tank in south Mumbai, a state-protected monument.
According to the notice, any construction or activity within the site requires prior approval under the Maharashtra Ancient Monuments Act, 1962. Officials found that the trust had installed a set of rules without permission and was charging visitors Rs 500 for photography without obtaining clearance. The department has termed the collection of such fees illegal.
The notice directs the trust to immediately stop all unauthorised activities, including displaying rules, charging visitors, and carrying out any construction or modifications within the premises. It also states that prior approval must be obtained before undertaking any such actions.
Further, the department has asked the trust to remove a temporary tin structure set up within the premises, warning that failure to comply may invite legal action.
The action follows a complaint received via email on April 13, prompting officials to review the situation.
Located in Walkeshwar, Malabar Hill, Banganga Tank, believed to date back to the 12th century, remains a prominent pilgrimage and heritage site in Mumbai.
