Deputy CM Shinde Links Strong Policing To Economic Growth, Calls For Global-Standard Force

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday highlighted the critical role of robust policing in accelerating the state’s development, while reiterating the government’s commitment to upgrading the Maharashtra Police to international benchmarks.

He was addressing the inauguration of the 36th Maharashtra State Police Sports Meet 2026 at the Armed Police Headquarters in Kalina, in the presence of senior ministers and top police officials. Shinde emphasised that the government’s responsibility goes beyond issuing instructions, noting that it stands firmly in support of the police force. He outlined ongoing initiatives to enhance infrastructure, including improved housing, better-equipped police stations, modern weaponry, vehicles, and advanced cybersecurity systems.

Calling the sports meet a significant platform for talent, Shinde described it as a “Maha Olympics” for the force. He noted that police personnel, typically seen in uniform, were showcasing their athletic abilities, adding that every participant should already consider themselves a winner.

In a lighter remark, he said that while referees were present on the field, what would be documented were sporting accomplishments rather than routine police records, drawing appreciation from attendees.

Shinde also pointed to the rising achievements of police athletes at national and international levels, expressing confidence that such talent could eventually reach global platforms like the Olympics.

Highlighting the demanding nature of police duties, he noted that personnel often work long hours during festivals, protests, and emergencies, frequently away from their families. In this context, he said sports play a vital role in relieving stress and fostering teamwork.

Referring to Mumbai as a key economic hub, Shinde stressed that effective policing is essential for sustaining growth and public confidence, while also noting improvements in crime detection rates.

Concluding his address, he described the khaki uniform as a symbol of service, sacrifice, and patriotism, and extended his best wishes to all participants.
