MMRDA Partners For Raigad-Pen Smart Township To Boost Planned Urban Growth

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has entered into a formal agreement with the Raigad-Pen Growth Centre to develop an integrated township in Maharashtra, marking a strategic push towards structured and sustainable urban expansion in the region.

The agreement was formally signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Sahyadri Guest House in South Mumbai. The initiative is aimed at accelerating planned development in Raigad district while strengthening regional connectivity and improving overall living standards.

Under the framework of the pact, Raigad-Pen Growth Centre Limited will be developed as a smart township in line with the state’s integrated township policy. The project is designed to promote infrastructure-led development, with a focus on enhancing urban amenities in Pen taluka and improving linkages with nearby port and logistics hubs.

Planners envision the township as a model for coordinated land use, combining residential, commercial, and public infrastructure with sustainable mobility systems. The development blueprint includes integrated utilities, digital infrastructure, and green open spaces to support long-term environmental and urban sustainability.

A key component of the project is the creation of a self-sustained township with provisions for social and affordable housing to meet local requirements and encourage inclusive growth. The planning approach also integrates community infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities, and public amenities within mixed-use zones.

Authorities have outlined a phased development strategy, supported by coordinated efforts between state departments, local bodies, and the growth centre to ensure faster approvals and efficient infrastructure execution. The township is expected to attract investments in logistics, services, and allied sectors, thereby expanding employment opportunities in the region.

Officials noted that the initiative aligns with Maharashtra’s broader urban transformation agenda, with implementation to be tracked through defined milestones and inter-agency coordination to ensure timely progress.
