Sion, Parel, Elphinstone Bridge Works Trigger Major Traffic Disruptions

Mumbai is witnessing widespread traffic disruption as simultaneous repair and reconstruction work on five key bridges across south and central parts of the city has led to severe congestion and longer travel times. The closure of the Sion and Elphinstone Road flyovers, along with partial restrictions on the Parel TT flyover, has diverted traffic onto already crowded roads. As a result, several internal and connecting routes are witnessing heavy bottlenecks, with vehicles moving at a slow pace, especially during peak hours.

The situation has worsened due to ongoing widening work near Byculla and Dadar stations. Narrowed carriageways and encroached footpaths, caused by construction materials and debris, have not only slowed vehicular movement but also inconvenienced pedestrians. A key pedestrian pathway under the Byculla flyover near Gloria Church has also been shut.

According to traffic police officials, congestion intensifies between 4 pm and 10 pm, particularly on the northbound stretch at Parel TT. Vehicles are being diverted via slip roads and alternate carriageways, but these routes are struggling to handle the increased load. Restrictions have also been imposed on heavy vehicles near Tilak bridge to ease pressure.

The closure of the Sion bridge has significantly disrupted connectivity between south Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. The project cost has risen from Rs 42.8 crore to nearly Rs 50 crore, with reopening now expected by mid-August. Repairs at the Parel TT flyover are likely to be completed by May 31. Residents have questioned the planning of multiple closures at the same time, citing lack of coordination and inadequate alternatives. With congestion worsening across key corridors, commuters continue to face daily challenges navigating the city.
