Mumbai Port Authority Accelerates Modernisation Drive To Build Future-Ready Maritime Hub

The Mumbai Port Authority has launched a series of major initiatives aimed at upgrading its marine assets and operational infrastructure to transform Mumbai Port into a modern, future-ready maritime hub. The initiatives are focused on improving navigational safety, operational efficiency, sustainability, and overall port management in line with the vision of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Chairman M. Angamuthu said the port authority is preparing a phased modernisation strategy for its tug fleet by adopting Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP)-compliant technologies. This includes hybrid and low-emission tug systems designed to improve efficiency while lowering environmental impact. “This initiative is aimed at improving operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact and aligning with national green shipping objectives,” Angamuthu stated.

The authority has also begun deepening two inner anchorages to accommodate vessels with deeper drafts. The move is expected to improve cargo-handling efficiency and operational safety, especially during adverse weather conditions when draft restrictions previously impacted shipping activities. The enhanced draft capacity will allow larger ships to dock, accelerate cargo movement, and minimise disruptions caused by rough weather.

To further strengthen marine navigation, the port authority is exploring the installation of virtual buoys and advanced navigational technologies within harbour limits. These systems are expected to improve vessel movement, channel identification, and marine traffic management during monsoon periods and low-visibility conditions.

In addition, Mumbai Port Authority is examining advanced environmental and emergency-response technologies, including modern harbour-cleaning systems for debris management and robotic firefighting solutions to enhance safety during marine fire incidents.

The authority is simultaneously working to improve ancillary marine services such as bunkering, freshwater supply, and ship provisioning to support maritime trade and ease of doing business. Plans are also underway to operationalise port leave allowance facilities for crew changes in coordination with Customs and Immigration authorities.

Further initiatives include ISO 45001-aligned occupational safety systems, a proposed Safety Experience Centre for simulation-based training, improved Ro-Pax passenger infrastructure, online registration systems for harbour crafts, and the development of a mini marina near the domestic cruise terminal for leisure vessels and small crafts.
