Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde conducted an extensive review of civic infrastructure projects and drain desilting works across Navi Mumbai over the past week, focusing on monsoon preparedness, traffic management, and urban service upgrades across the city.
The inspection covered major natural drain-cleaning operations in Kopri, Vashi and Sanpada, along with ongoing bridge construction projects, congestion-prone junctions and public utility facilities. During the review of desilting works at Kopri and Sector 17 in Vashi, the commissioner directed civic officials to ensure that excavated sludge is removed immediately after partial drying to prevent sanitation problems and avoid obstruction to water flow.
According to civic officials, the current desilting drive is prioritising the clearance of obstructions from natural drains to ensure uninterrupted stormwater flow during the upcoming monsoon season. Large-scale silt removal operations are being undertaken across key drainage channels this year to reduce the risk of flooding and waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
The inspection began with a review of the Ghansoli–Airoli creek bridge project linked to Palm Beach Road. Officials informed the commissioner that 44 of the proposed 89 bridge piers have been completed so far. Dr Shinde instructed project authorities to complete the remaining pier foundation works and reach the pier cap stage before the end of June. He also directed teams to continue girder casting and related construction activities during the monsoon to avoid delays in execution.
At Talavali Naka, the commissioner assessed recurring traffic congestion issues and instructed officials to seek technical guidance from the Indian Institute of Technology for preparing a traffic improvement strategy. Authorities were also asked to take action against roadside parking, which has been contributing significantly to traffic bottlenecks in the area.
The commissioner further reviewed drainage improvements, public health infrastructure, market redevelopment proposals, structural audits and civic maintenance works at multiple locations across Navi Mumbai, while also issuing directions aimed at strengthening urban cleanliness, safety and public convenience ahead of the monsoon season.
