Mumbai Port Authority has launched a wide-ranging modernisation programme to transform the city’s historic harbour into a more sustainable, technology-enabled, and climate-resilient maritime hub. The initiative comes amid increasing pressure on Indian ports to expand trade capacity while meeting stricter environmental and safety standards.
The overhaul focuses on upgrading marine operations through cleaner technologies, improved navigation systems, enhanced harbour management, and stronger emergency response infrastructure. Officials said the objective is to improve operational efficiency and prepare the port for evolving global shipping norms and climate-related challenges.
A key component of the plan is the gradual shift towards low-emission marine operations through hybrid and green tug systems. Maritime experts note that such technologies are becoming essential worldwide as ports work to reduce emissions from vessel handling and waterfront logistics. Given its dense urban setting, Mumbai’s harbour is closely tied to the city’s environmental health, making sustainable operations increasingly important.
The authority is also undertaking dredging and deepening of inner anchorage zones to enable smoother movement of larger vessels. This is expected to reduce disruptions during monsoon conditions and improve cargo handling efficiency.
In parallel, advanced navigation solutions, including virtual buoy systems and digital marine guidance tools, are being evaluated to enhance vessel movement during low-visibility conditions. Experts say such systems are increasingly vital as climate variability affects maritime operations.
Environmental upgrades form another key pillar of the programme, with proposals for mechanised waste collection systems to improve water quality and reduce marine debris. Automated firefighting systems and remote-operated emergency response tools are also under consideration to strengthen safety along the waterfront.
The plan further includes improvements to passenger infrastructure, Ro-Pax services and digital systems for vessel management. A proposed marina near the domestic cruise terminal is being explored to better organise small craft movement and expand recreational waterfront use.
Urban transport and port experts say the initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernise Mumbai’s eastern waterfront through logistics upgrades, multimodal integration and maritime-driven development. However, they caution that ecological protection, flood risk management and public access must remain central to future expansion.
Analysts believe these reforms could play a crucial role in shaping Mumbai’s long-term industrial competitiveness, environmental resilience and waterfront transformation.
