A major milestone in pedestrian infrastructure has been achieved in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, as authorities completed the installation of large steel bridge segments connecting Brahmand Junction to a metro station access point near Tikuji Ni Wadi Metro Station. The development is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity and pedestrian safety along the heavily congested Ghodbunder Road corridor in Thane.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) successfully executed the launch of key structural components for a new foot over bridge linking Brahmand Junction with the metro station. The installation took place above one of the region’s busiest arterial roads, while an operational metro viaduct remained overhead, making execution highly complex.
Officials involved in the project stated that the construction required precise engineering due to limited working space, continuous vehicular movement below, and the need to coordinate heavy lifting operations beneath existing metro infrastructure. Four massive steel girders, each nearly 60 metres long and weighing over 250 metric tonnes, were placed during the operation.
Urban planners highlight that infrastructure along Ghodbunder Road has become increasingly critical due to rapid residential and commercial growth over the past decade. The rising population density has significantly increased both vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement between residential complexes, commercial hubs and transport nodes.
Experts note that metro expansion alone cannot address commuting challenges unless strong pedestrian linkages are developed. The new foot overbridge is expected to reduce dangerous road crossings and improve seamless integration between metro services and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The operation involved specialised cranes, multi-axle transport vehicles and coordinated traffic management systems to minimise disruption on the busy corridor. More than 60 engineers and technical personnel participated in the execution of the project, reflecting the growing complexity of urban infrastructure development in densely built environments.
Transport analysts emphasise that pedestrian infrastructure often receives less attention compared to large-scale transport projects, despite its direct impact on commuter safety and accessibility. They also point out that such connectivity solutions are essential for encouraging greater use of public transport by improving last-mile convenience and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
The Ghodbunder Road corridor remains a vital transport link connecting Thane with western suburbs and rapidly expanding residential clusters across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with multiple infrastructure upgrades currently underway to support rising commuter demand.
