Mumbai’s Parking System Set For Digital Upgrade, Experts Stress Need For More Infrastructure

Mumbai’s long-standing parking crisis could soon witness a technology-driven transformation as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation moves ahead with its proposed smart parking initiative aimed at creating a citywide digital parking network.

According to reports, the civic body is in the final stages of appointing a consultant for the project, which will allow motorists to check parking availability in real time, reserve slots before starting their journey, and make online payments through a dedicated mobile application and web portal.

The initiative comes amid rapidly increasing vehicle density in Mumbai. Official data reportedly shows that the city now has nearly 2,300 vehicles per kilometre, significantly higher than around 1,840 in 2019 and nearly 1,150 in 2014. More than three lakh new vehicles were also registered in Mumbai during 2025 alone, further intensifying parking shortages across the city.

At present, the BMC manages 26 off-street parking facilities. Under the proposed model, municipal parking spaces will be integrated with private parking facilities located in malls, commercial buildings and business districts. Housing societies may also be encouraged to temporarily open unused parking slots for public use during daytime hours.

Industry experts have welcomed the proposal while emphasising that technology alone cannot fully resolve Mumbai’s parking issues. Ashish Majithia said, “The BMC’s initiative is a progressive and much-needed step towards streamlining urban mobility in Mumbai. A smart parking ecosystem that allows motorists to check real-time availability and reserve slots in advance can significantly reduce unnecessary vehicle circulation, traffic congestion, fuel wastage, and commuter stress.”

However, he added, “Smart systems and physical infrastructure development must go hand in hand.”

Naveen Rajagopalan also backed the move, stating, “Digitally integrated parking management is the future for metro cities like Mumbai where every square foot of space is critical.”

The BMC is also considering a 40% increase in parking fees at municipal parking lots. Officials believe the smart parking platform, expected to begin pilot implementation across five civic wards, could help reduce unnecessary traffic caused by motorists searching for parking spaces in crowded areas.
