Mumbai’s urban transport network is set for a major upgrade as work on the extension of Mumbai Metro Line 11 towards Bandra Terminus has officially commenced. The ambitious infrastructure project, estimated at nearly Rs 23,487 crore, aims to improve connectivity and reduce travel time across key parts of the city.
The extended metro corridor will offer direct connectivity between Bandra Terminus and the Gateway of India, benefiting thousands of daily commuters who currently face long traffic delays and limited transport options on this busy route.
Planned over a stretch of approximately 16.5 km, the Metro Line 11 extension is expected to become a crucial link in Mumbai’s expanding metro network. The project is designed to provide faster, smoother, and more efficient travel across major commercial, residential, and transport hubs in the city.
One of the key highlights of the project is a 7-km underground section passing through Dharavi, one of the most densely populated areas in Mumbai. The underground corridor is expected to significantly improve mobility for residents and daily passengers traveling through the area.
Initially, Metro Line 11 was planned to connect Wadala with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). However, the extension to Bandra Terminus is expected to further strengthen the city’s public transport integration and improve interchange connectivity between multiple metro lines and railway stations.
The project is also expected to ease pressure on Mumbai’s congested roads by encouraging more commuters to shift towards metro travel. Authorities believe the new route will help reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel time, and make daily commuting more convenient and reliable for passengers across Mumbai.
