Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide outlined her vision for transforming Mumbai into a more resilient, efficient and future-ready city during a recent conclave, where discussions centred on urban infrastructure, sustainable development, civic innovation and improving quality of life in India’s financial capital.
One of Maharashtra’s most respected bureaucrats, Bhide brings nearly three decades of administrative experience to her current role. Her public service career began as Assistant Collector in Kolhapur, where she served between 1997 and 1999. She later worked as the Chief Executive Officer of Sindhudurg district before taking on several important assignments across Maharashtra.
Over the years, she has earned a reputation for handling complex governance and infrastructure challenges, playing a key role in several transformative projects across the state.
Bhide is widely recognised for her contribution to Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure and is often referred to as the city’s “Metro Woman.” As Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) from 2015 to 2020, she was instrumental in driving the execution of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro corridor, one of Mumbai’s most ambitious urban mobility projects.
The implementation of the underground Metro line required navigating a range of engineering, logistical and environmental challenges in one of the world’s most densely populated cities. During this period, Bhide also became a prominent advocate for the development of the Metro car shed in Aarey, a project that sparked considerable public debate over concerns about preserving green spaces.
Her leadership in delivering critical infrastructure projects under challenging circumstances helped establish her as one of the most influential figures in Mumbai’s urban development landscape.
As Mumbai continues to evolve amid rapid urbanisation and growing infrastructure demands, Bhide’s focus remains on strengthening civic systems, enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable growth and preparing the city for future challenges.
