MMRDA Plans Seven Foot Over Bridges Along Metro Line 9 To Strengthen Safety & Last-Mile Connectivity

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the construction of seven Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) along the 11-km Mumbai Metro Line 9 corridor between Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar, a move aimed at improving pedestrian safety, station accessibility and last-mile connectivity.

The bridges will be developed as part of MMRDA’s Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) initiative, which focuses on creating seamless links between metro stations and surrounding transport networks. The project has received approvals from MMRDA’s 287th Executive Committee, including clearances from the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers.

Designed to address pedestrian movement challenges along the heavily trafficked Western Express Highway and Mira-Bhayandar Road, the FOBs will provide grade-separated crossings across roads ranging from 30 to 60 metres in width. Officials said the infrastructure will help reduce dependence on signalised pedestrian crossings, improve traffic flow and enhance commuter safety.

With civil works on Metro Line 9 nearing completion and Phase I already operational since April 7, 2026, MMRDA is fast-tracking the delivery of these facilities to ensure they are available when the entire corridor opens for public use.

The authority has awarded a contract worth ₹82.09 crore to M/s Speco Infrastructure JV M/s PRS Infraprojects LLP for the construction of the seven bridges under Package 1 of Metro Line 9.

The proposed FOBs will be located at Dahisar Toll Naka and Miragaon on the Western Express Highway, and at Kashigaon, Shivar Garden, Maxus Mall, Veg Sagar Hotel and Sai Baba Nagar along Mira-Bhayandar Road. Bridge lengths will range from 80 metres to 145 metres.

Each FOB will feature staircases, lifts for universal accessibility and CCTV surveillance systems. The structures will have a standard width of three metres and are designed to support safe and efficient commuter movement.

According to MMRDA, the bridges will improve access to Metro Line 9 stations, facilitate smoother passenger dispersal during peak hours, enhance integration with other transport modes and contribute to higher metro ridership by strengthening last-mile connectivity across the Mira-Bhayandar region.
