Mumbai’s expanding public transport network has moved a step closer to greater integration, with the Chembur Metro station on Metro Line 2B receiving safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The approval marks a key milestone in the development of the city’s much-anticipated Metro–Monorail interchange facility.
The clearance comes after extensive inspections carried out by the CMRS along the section between Diamond Garden and Chembur station. Simultaneously, safety audits and evaluations were undertaken on the adjoining monorail infrastructure to ensure that the integrated transit facility is fully prepared for passenger operations.
The interchange has been designed to provide seamless connectivity between Metro Line 2B and the Mumbai Monorail network through a dedicated connected concourse. The facility is also expected to improve access to the nearby suburban railway station, creating a comprehensive multimodal transport hub in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.
Most of the civil and systems-related work associated with the interchange has already been completed. Transport authorities had earlier sought approval to extend Metro Line 2B services up to Chembur, considering the interchange a critical component in enhancing connectivity and boosting commuter convenience along the corridor.
Chembur station forms part of Metro Line 2B, the important east-west route connecting D N Nagar and Mandale. While sections of the corridor are already operational, the extension up to Chembur is expected to significantly improve network integration and accessibility to key residential, commercial and transit destinations.
Urban mobility experts view the interchange as a major step towards creating a more interconnected public transportation ecosystem across Mumbai. By linking metro, monorail and suburban railway services, the project aims to enable smoother passenger movement and reduce dependence on road-based travel.
Officials believe the improved connectivity will not only shorten travel times but also encourage higher ridership across both Metro Line 2B and the Mumbai Monorail network. Once operational, the facility is expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity and enhance commuting efficiency for passengers travelling across eastern Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
