Maharashtra Begins Redevelopment Of Iconic Air India Building Into Modern Administrative Hub

The Maharashtra government has initiated plans to transform Mumbai’s landmark Air India Building at Nariman Point into a state-of-the-art administrative complex, with Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale directing officials to prioritise structural safety, quality construction and public convenience throughout the redevelopment process.

During a site visit on Wednesday, Bhosale reviewed the condition of the building and instructed officials to conduct a detailed structural audit before any renovation work begins. He emphasised that government offices should be shifted to the premises only after all essential repair and strengthening works are completed.

The minister said that maintaining high construction standards must remain a key focus of the project. He directed officials to utilise durable materials and modern infrastructure systems, including upgraded electrical and technical installations, to ensure the building remains functional and efficient for years to come.

Bhosale also called for a redesign of the building’s entrance and exterior appearance to better reflect Maharashtra’s cultural identity and architectural heritage. He suggested seeking inputs from renowned architects and expert institutions while undertaking the beautification exercise.

Highlighting the importance of citizen-centric infrastructure, the minister said accessibility, safety and convenience for visitors to government offices should be given top priority. He further instructed officials to ensure that the renovation is completed within the stipulated timeline without compromising on quality.

One of Mumbai’s most recognisable commercial landmarks, the Air India Building was officially transferred to the Maharashtra government on June 2 after being acquired from Air India Asset Holding Limited for ₹1,601 crore. The purchase had received state cabinet approval in September 2023.

Once modernised, the strategically located property is expected to accommodate multiple government departments, helping improve administrative efficiency and coordination while reducing dependence on scattered office spaces.

“The transfer of the Air India Building is a significant milestone in strengthening Maharashtra’s administrative infrastructure. With a focus on quality, sustainability and public convenience, this iconic structure will be developed into a model government complex,” Bhosale said.
