Rohit Pawar Raises Questions Over Mumbai’s Monsoon Readiness After Waterlogging Incidents

NCP-SP MLA Rohit Pawar has criticised Mumbai’s civic infrastructure and monsoon preparedness after waterlogging was reported in several parts of the city following relatively light rainfall. The legislator alleged that incomplete civic works and poor execution of infrastructure projects have contributed to recurring flooding issues despite substantial expenditure.

Speaking on the situation, Pawar claimed that contracts had been awarded and funds disbursed for various development works, but many projects remained unfinished. According to him, this has resulted in drainage bottlenecks and water accumulation at multiple locations even during moderate rainfall.

He argued that the recent incidents exposed shortcomings in the city’s infrastructure management and questioned whether the promised improvements had been effectively implemented. Pawar further stated that if Mumbai had experienced heavier rainfall instead of light showers, the impact could have been far more severe for residents and commuters.

Commenting on the situation, he remarked that under such circumstances people might have been forced to navigate flooded roads in boats, drawing a comparison with Venice. He suggested that the current condition of the city reflects inadequate planning and execution of civic projects.

The MLA also levelled allegations of large-scale corruption within the civic administration, claiming that despite assurances of infrastructure upgrades and development works, Mumbai’s condition has continued to deteriorate. He questioned the effectiveness of the authorities responsible for implementing projects to improve drainage and flood management across the city.

Pawar’s remarks came after rainfall on the same day led to waterlogging at the Andheri Subway, forcing authorities to shut the key traffic corridor for nearly 45 minutes temporarily. The incident disrupted vehicular movement and renewed concerns regarding Mumbai’s preparedness for the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken several pre-monsoon measures over recent months, including desilting major drains and nullahs, removing accumulated waste, and carrying out road concretisation works at multiple locations. Civic authorities maintain that these initiatives are aimed at minimising flooding and improving the city’s resilience during periods of heavy rainfall.
