Mumbai’s Monorail network has received final clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) after the successful completion of a comprehensive modernisation programme covering its signalling, communication and operational systems.
The approval was granted following a series of inspections, technical assessments and trial operations conducted along the 19.54-kilometre corridor connecting Chembur and Jacob Circle. The certification clears the way for the upgraded systems to be fully deployed in regular passenger services.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which manages the monorail network, undertook the upgrade to improve operational performance, enhance reliability and address technical challenges that had affected services in the past.
As part of the modernisation initiative, several critical components related to train control, signalling and communication were replaced or upgraded. The project also included the installation of advanced monitoring systems designed to support safer and more efficient operations across the corridor.
According to officials, the safety clearance follows detailed evaluations to ensure that all newly installed infrastructure meets the required operational and safety standards. Approval from the CMRS is mandatory before upgraded railway systems can be commissioned for passenger use.
The monorail route serves several residential, commercial and transport hubs across eastern and central Mumbai. Authorities expect the upgraded systems to improve service dependability, reduce technical disruptions and strengthen overall operational efficiency.
Officials stated that the new infrastructure incorporates enhanced safety features, redundancy mechanisms and improved communication networks, helping minimise the risk of system failures and service interruptions.
India’s first operational monorail system, the Mumbai Monorail was opened in phases and has faced periodic maintenance and technical issues over the years. The latest upgrade is aimed at improving long-term performance and ensuring smoother operations for commuters.
MMRDA said the modernisation effort is part of its broader strategy to strengthen public transport infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region through upgrades to existing transit systems and expansion of the metro network.
With the safety certification now in place, commuters travelling between Chembur, Wadala, Dadar and Jacob Circle are expected to benefit from more reliable and stable monorail services in the coming years.
