MMRDA Introduces ‘Car-Free Fridays’ In BKC To Promote Public Transport & Ease Traffic

In an effort to reduce congestion and encourage sustainable commuting, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has launched a new initiative in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), designating every Friday as a public transport-focused day for employees and office-goers.

Announced around World Environment Day, the programme encourages commuters working in the city’s premier business district to rely on public transport options such as the metro, BEST buses and suburban rail services instead of private vehicles. The initiative is aimed at addressing persistent traffic congestion and improving air quality in one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial hubs.

Spread across nearly 370 hectares, BKC is home to major corporate offices, financial institutions and commercial establishments, generating employment for more than two lakh people. Despite recent transportation upgrades, including the opening of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 station connecting BKC with Aarey in 2024, the district continues to experience significant traffic pressure during peak commuting hours.

The MMRDA has partnered with WRI India for the initiative, which seeks to promote environmentally responsible travel habits while reducing the number of private vehicles entering the business district.

Officials believe the campaign will encourage greater adoption of existing public transport infrastructure and help create a more efficient mobility ecosystem within BKC. The area is already served by metro connectivity, an extensive BEST bus network and nearby suburban railway stations.

The weekly campaign also aligns with broader national efforts to encourage the use of public transportation systems and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

The initiative forms part of MMRDA’s larger mobility strategy for BKC, which includes future transport enhancements such as pod taxi services and integrated transit planning to support growing demand from upcoming infrastructure projects, including the high-speed rail terminus and the proposed International Financial Services Centre.
