Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Tuesday conducted a detailed review of the newly opened extension of the Mrunaltai Gore Flyover in Goregaon (West), amid public discussions regarding the condition of the project following its inauguration.
The inspection focused on the recently completed section connecting Ram Mandir Road and Relief Road. During the visit, the Mayor walked across the flyover to assess various aspects of the structure, including its design, curved sections, expansion joints and overall construction quality. Senior officials from the bridge department, along with local representatives, accompanied her during the review.
While expressing satisfaction with the overall execution of the project, Tawde instructed civic authorities to address several pending issues before the flyover becomes fully operational. She directed officials to rectify minor surface undulations, complete unfinished edge treatments and install additional directional signages wherever necessary to improve commuter convenience and safety.
“The quality of the flyover appears to be good. However, minor undulations should be rectified, finishing works should be completed and greenery should be developed to provide a pleasant visual experience for commuters,” Tawde said after the inspection.
Officials informed the Mayor that the flyover has been surfaced with a 40-mm-thick layer of mastic asphalt, a specialised material known for its durability, waterproofing capabilities and ability to protect bridge structures from corrosion. According to engineers, the surfacing method has been selected to enhance the longevity of the flyover while minimising long-term maintenance requirements.
Technical experts also explained that although certain portions of the road surface may currently appear slightly uneven, regular vehicular movement is expected to help improve the riding quality over time.
Apart from structural and engineering aspects, the Mayor emphasised the importance of improving the visual appeal of the corridor. She directed officials to explore landscaping initiatives, including the development of vertical gardens and greenery along both sides of the flyover.
The inspection comes as civic authorities work to address public concerns and ensure the project delivers both improved connectivity and a better commuting experience for residents in Mumbai’s western suburbs.
