BEST Plans 1,500 AC Midi Buses To Strengthen Mumbai’s Metro Feeder Network

Mumbai’s public transport network is set for a major boost as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking prepares to induct 1,500 air-conditioned midi buses to improve connectivity between metro corridors, railway stations and residential neighbourhoods.

The proposed fleet expansion forms part of BEST’s broader plan to increase its total bus strength to nearly 7,000 vehicles by 2027, helping improve last-mile and first-mile connectivity across the city.

Officials said the new AC midi buses have been chosen specifically for routes where conventional full-sized buses face operational difficulties because of narrow roads, traffic congestion and dense residential layouts. Their smaller size will allow them to navigate internal roads more efficiently while providing better access to metro stations and other key transit hubs.

BEST has reportedly completed the tendering process and identified potential operators under a wet-lease arrangement. Under this model, private operators will supply and maintain the buses, while BEST will continue to oversee route planning, scheduling and passenger services. The initiative is also expected to benefit from central government programmes that support cleaner and more efficient urban mobility solutions.

The move comes as Mumbai continues to expand its metro network, with several corridors already operational and multiple lines under development. Urban transport planners have repeatedly highlighted the importance of robust feeder services to improve metro ridership and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

Over the past few years, BEST has been steadily modernising its fleet with a greater emphasis on air-conditioned and environmentally sustainable buses. The addition of midi buses is expected to enhance commuter comfort, improve service frequency and provide better transport access in neighbourhoods that are currently underserved by larger buses.

As one of the city’s most important public transport providers, BEST serves millions of passengers every year. Officials believe the proposed fleet augmentation will help meet growing travel demand, particularly in areas benefiting from new metro connectivity and residential development.

With Mumbai investing heavily in integrated urban mobility, the planned introduction of 1,500 AC midi buses is expected to play a crucial role in creating a more seamless and interconnected public transport ecosystem.
