Mira-Bhayander Flyover Opens To Traffic Amid Earlier Design Debate; MMRDA Defends Configuration

The much-discussed Mira–Bhayander flyover, which drew public attention earlier this year over concerns about its lane configuration, has now been opened to vehicular traffic. The structure was formally inaugurated on Sunday by local BJP leaders, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which developed the project, was not part of the inauguration ceremony.

Constructed as part of the Metro Line 9 double-decker corridor, the flyover was inaugurated by former BJP MLA Narendra Mehta and Mira-Bhayander Mayor Dimple Mehta in the presence of party representatives and local residents.

The project had become the subject of intense discussion on social media after photographs and videos showing a transition from four lanes to two lanes circulated online. The images led to concerns that the design could create a traffic bottleneck along an already congested stretch. However, MMRDA had rejected allegations of a design flaw, stating that the narrowing was an intentional engineering solution incorporated into the approved plans.

Following the inauguration, Narendra Mehta said the elevated corridor connecting Golden Nest and Deepak Hospital Road would significantly improve mobility in the area by easing traffic congestion and enhancing travel efficiency.

“The flyover will go a long way in reducing congestion on this busy stretch. Keeping in mind the growing needs of Mira-Bhayander, developing modern and robust infrastructure has always been our priority and will continue to remain so,” Mehta said.

He also acknowledged the support of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for infrastructure projects in the region, stating that the flyover reflects the government’s commitment to improving civic infrastructure in rapidly expanding urban areas.

The inauguration programme was attended by Deputy Mayor Dhruvkishor Patil, Standing Committee Chairman Hasmukh Gehlot, BJP district president Dilip Jain, party office-bearers and local residents.

The flyover is considered a key component of the Metro Line 9 project and is expected to improve traffic flow along one of Mira Road’s busiest corridors. MMRDA officials have previously clarified that the controversial lane transition was based on detailed traffic studies, engineering assessments and site-specific constraints, while also ensuring integration with the existing road network.

Despite the earlier criticism, authorities maintain that the flyover has been built according to approved specifications and will provide meaningful relief to commuters travelling through the Mira–Bhayander region.
