Botanical Garden, Cricket Turf & Skate Park Planned Beneath Andheri’s Gokhale Flyover

A neglected space beneath the Gokhale Flyover on N. S. Phadke Marg in Andheri East is set to be transformed into a multi-purpose recreational hub, with redevelopment work now underway. The initiative aims to convert an underutilised area into a vibrant public space featuring sports facilities, green zones and community amenities.

Andheri East MLA Murji Patel announced the commencement of the project, describing it as a “dream project” designed to reclaim a site that had long been used for dumping abandoned vehicles, scrap material, and construction debris.

According to Patel, residents had repeatedly expressed concerns over the condition of the area, citing issues related to cleanliness, safety, and fire hazards. Following these complaints, the space was cleared within 48 hours. He added that the clean-up marked the beginning of a larger redevelopment plan, with efforts over the following months focused on securing approvals, maintaining the site and obtaining financial clearances.

With the necessary approvals now in place, construction has officially begun.

The redevelopment plan includes a botanical garden, skate park, half basketball court, cricket turf, bouldering zone, open-air gym, children’s play area, study space, seating areas, public toilets and an HBT dispensary, along with other public amenities intended to serve residents of the locality.

Patel said the project will benefit communities on both sides of N. S. Phadke Marg and reflects a broader effort to revive neglected public spaces across Andheri.

He noted that the initiative is part of a larger vision to reclaim encroached, abandoned and underutilised land and convert it into accessible community infrastructure that enhances the quality of urban life.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), engineers, BJP Mumbai secretary Acharya Pawan Tripathi, and several former and current corporators.

Once completed, the project is expected to provide residents with new recreational, fitness and leisure facilities while significantly improving the appearance and utility of the space beneath the flyover.
