Construction of the Kasheli Depot for Mumbai Metro Line 5 has reached 23% completion as of June 2026, marking progress on the infrastructure that will support operations along the 32-km Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan-Ulhasnagar Metro corridor.
Located near the Kasheli Toll Plaza, the depot will play a key role in maintaining the Metro network, although it will not be accessible to passengers. The facility will handle train inspections, repairs, testing, maintenance and parking to ensure safe and reliable Metro services once the corridor becomes operational.
Designed to accommodate around 30 trainsets, the depot will include workshop lines for maintenance, inspection bays for routine checks, a dedicated test track to evaluate trains before deployment, and a Depot Control Centre to manage train movements within the facility. It will also house utility infrastructure, advanced maintenance systems, administrative buildings and staff accommodation.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Kasheli Depot will serve as the “operational backbone” of Metro Line 5, supporting “safe, efficient and reliable” services across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. Temporary inspection, testing and commissioning facilities are also being developed to support the phased rollout and operational readiness of the Metro line.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the project reflects Maharashtra’s commitment to creating “modern and reliable public transport infrastructure.”
“Metro Line 5 will boost connectivity across Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar while advancing our vision of a developed, well-connected Maharashtra,” Fadnavis stated, as per MMRDA.
The depot is being constructed on approximately 27 hectares of land, where challenging marine clay soil conditions have required specialised engineering solutions. MMRDA said advanced ground-improvement techniques are being implemented in consultation with IIT Bombay to strengthen the foundation and ensure the long-term structural stability of the facility.
Once operational, the depot is expected to play a vital role in ensuring efficient Metro operations and supporting the expansion of public transport connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
