Construction of the long-delayed Radio Club Jetty project in south Mumbai is set to resume after the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) appointed a new contractor to complete the remaining work. The project had remained stalled for more than three months after the previous contractor was removed for failing to meet construction deadlines.
According to officials, Modern Engineering and Projects Ltd has emerged as the successful bidder after quoting Rs 204 crore for the project. The appointment follows a fresh tendering process initiated by the MMB to expedite completion of the state’s waterfront infrastructure project.
The proposed Radio Club Jetty is intended to ease passenger traffic currently handled by the five jetties at the Gateway of India, which serve around 3 million to 3.5 million travellers annually commuting to destinations such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Mandva and the Elephanta Caves.
With an estimated project cost of Rs 229 crore, the development includes a 6,400-square-metre terminal featuring a tennis-racket-shaped jetty with 10 boarding platforms. Additional facilities will include parking for 150 vehicles, a VIP lounge, ticketing counters, administrative offices, a food court, a café and an open-air amphitheatre.
The project has, however, faced opposition from local residents and environmental groups, who raised concerns over increased traffic congestion and noise pollution. The proposal was also challenged before the Bombay High Court but was allowed to proceed.
The contract was originally awarded to RKEC Projects Ltd in October 2024, with completion targeted for May 2026. Although the deadline was later extended until August 2026, the company failed to achieve the required milestones. Consequently, MMB terminated its contract on April 21, 2026.
A fresh tender for the balance work, estimated at Rs 196.34 crore, was issued on April 29, 2026. After the initial process received only one technically qualified bidder, the tender was reissued on June 17, 2026.
“After the fresh tender process, Modern Engineering and Projects Ltd has emerged as the winner with the lowest bid,” said an official. “The official letter will be issued now and work will begin soon.”
