Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane reviewed the progress of the proposed redevelopment of Sassoon Dock and the ongoing Marol fish market project, while also assessing welfare measures aimed at improving infrastructure and working conditions for Mumbai’s fishing community.
The review meeting was held at Mantralaya with officials from the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation (MFDC) to evaluate the status of projects being implemented for fishermen across the city.
During the meeting, Rane assessed the progress of works initiated under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed for the redevelopment of Sassoon Dock, one of Mumbai’s oldest and most prominent fishing harbours. Officials also briefed the minister on infrastructure improvements planned in the dock area and the implementation status of various components under the redevelopment project.
The minister also reviewed the ongoing development of the Marol fishermen’s market, discussing measures to accelerate the project and enhance facilities for vendors and the local fishing community.
Apart from infrastructure projects, the meeting focused on welfare initiatives for fishermen and women engaged in fisheries-related activities. Officials discussed the proposal to provide hand gloves and gumboots to women working in the sector to improve safety and hygiene during their daily operations.
Rane directed the concerned departments to take the necessary steps to ensure that fishermen and women receive adequate infrastructure and essential facilities to support their livelihoods.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector through improved market infrastructure and better working conditions for those dependent on the industry.
Among those present at the meeting were Fisheries Commissioner Prerna Deshbhratar, officials of the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation, and representatives of Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF).
The review forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to modernise fishing infrastructure, improve market facilities and enhance welfare measures for the fishing community while advancing redevelopment projects at key fisheries hubs in Mumbai.
