The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) are working together to enhance tourism infrastructure across Mumbai by introducing world-class visitor amenities and improving the overall travel experience. The initiative aims to strengthen Mumbai’s position as a leading global tourism destination through better civic facilities, improved accessibility and enhanced tourist services.
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide chaired a joint meeting at the BMC headquarters on Friday with officials from the BMC, MTDC and the Mumbai City Collectorate to review measures for upgrading tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities across the city.
The meeting was attended by Mumbai City District Collector Aanchal Goyal, Additional District Collector Bappasaheb Thorat, Deputy Commissioner (Commissioner’s Office) Prashant Gaikwad, District Planning Officer Sanjaykumar Shinde, MTDC General Manager Chandrashekhar Jaiswal, Head of Business Development Mansi Kothare and other senior officials.

The proposed initiative focuses on improving sanitation, beautification, safety measures, wayfinding signage, public toilets, drinking water facilities and digital information systems at major tourist destinations. These upgrades are intended to create a more convenient and enjoyable experience for both domestic and international visitors.
“To position Mumbai as a vibrant cultural and heritage tourism destination, the BMC is taking steps to showcase the city’s iconic landmarks, historical sites and unique attractions to tourists,” Bhide said.
She added that the civic body is working towards creating a seamless and enriching travel experience by strengthening tourist guidance systems and enhancing visitor amenities across the city.
Bhide further stated that the BMC will collaborate with the MTDC to promote Mumbai’s tourism potential, develop new attractions and provide tourists with reliable information through dedicated digital platforms. She added that while civic services remain the BMC’s core responsibility, tourism promotion will receive focused attention to enhance the city’s appeal as a global tourist destination.
Highlighting the state’s tourism strategy, MTDC General Manager Chandrashekhar Jaiswal said the Maharashtra government remains committed to strengthening the sector through improved infrastructure, strategic planning and sustainable development initiatives.
Emphasising Mumbai’s immense tourism potential, he said local civic authorities, particularly the BMC, should play a leading role in promoting eco-tourism and adventure tourism while ensuring world-class infrastructure and visitor-friendly facilities across the city.
