The reconstruction of the Bandra-Khar flyover is set to be completed in a shorter timeframe, with Western Railway adopting an accelerated construction plan to support the ongoing sixth railway line project in Mumbai.
The revised strategy is expected to reduce the construction period to nearly half of the original estimate, helping minimise inconvenience to commuters while ensuring timely progress of the suburban rail expansion project.
The flyover reconstruction is a key component of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), under which a sixth railway line is being developed between Mumbai Central and Borivali. The additional corridor is expected to enhance suburban train capacity, improve operational efficiency and reduce congestion on Mumbai’s heavily used western suburban railway network.
According to railway officials, the reconstruction work is now expected to be completed in approximately 45 days through round-the-clock construction and faster execution methods. Earlier projections had estimated that rebuilding the flyover would take close to three months. The revised schedule is expected to shorten the duration of traffic diversions and reduce disruption for motorists using the Bandra-Khar corridor.
The existing flyover is being dismantled because its supporting pillars obstruct the alignment required for the new railway line. After demolition, a new flyover will be constructed with a design that accommodates the expanded rail infrastructure while maintaining road connectivity.
Western Railway is coordinating with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and traffic police to implement diversion plans and manage traffic during the construction period. Temporary traffic arrangements are expected to remain in place only for the reduced construction duration.
The sixth railway line is among Western Railway’s major infrastructure projects aimed at expanding rail capacity. The additional tracks will enable better segregation of suburban and long-distance train services, improving punctuality and allowing more frequent suburban train operations along the western corridor.
The faster reconstruction of the Bandra-Khar flyover is expected to remove a critical obstacle in the execution of the sixth railway line project. Once completed, both the upgraded flyover and the new rail corridor are expected to strengthen connectivity, improve operational flexibility and support the long-term expansion of Mumbai’s suburban transport network.
