The Maharashtra government has given in-principle approval to extend the proposed Thane Integral Ring Metro towards Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva, potentially improving public transport connectivity for thousands of commuters in these rapidly developing suburbs.
The proposed extension is expected to link the Thane metro network with Metro Line 12, which will connect Kalyan and Taloja, as well as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. The move is aimed at creating better integration between multiple transport systems and reducing dependence on the suburban railway network.
A feasibility study is already underway for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The state government has directed Maha Metro to complete the report within six months. The DPR will establish the final alignment, station locations, estimated project cost, engineering requirements and construction timeline.
According to the proposal, the corridor will pass through areas including Kolbad, old Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva. The line is expected to have both underground and elevated sections. Maha Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar has indicated that land acquisition could be relatively easier along stretches where vacant land is available.
The proposed corridor will provide an interchange with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail network at Mhatardi in Diva and connect with Metro Line 12 at Manpada. This could create a broader public transport network linking Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva, Dombivli, Kalyan, Bhiwandi and Taloja.
However, some residents of Chendani Koliwada and old Thane have raised concerns about underground tunnelling and its potential impact on existing structures. Metro authorities have assured residents that construction will be undertaken after detailed assessments to ensure structural safety.
The proposed expansion could also strengthen the real estate appeal of Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva by improving connectivity and access to employment and transport hubs.
