Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday reviewed a proposal to redevelop land owned by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) through the public-private partnership (PPP) model, with an emphasis on modern bus depots and improved passenger facilities.
A review meeting was held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai to discuss the proposed development of MSRTC-owned properties. Shinde directed officials to ensure that the new bus depots and other facilities built on the corporation’s land feature modern amenities and an “iconic” design that enhances the cityscape.
He also stressed that passenger convenience should remain a key consideration while planning the redevelopment of MSRTC properties. The facilities should be designed to provide commuters with a comfortable, safe and user-friendly experience.
According to Shinde, 147 MSRTC bus depots and properties will be taken up for redevelopment under the PPP model during the first phase of the initiative.
The proposed developments are expected to go beyond conventional bus depots. Plans include modern bus ports along with passenger facilities, offices, hospitals, cinema halls and citizen service centres. The objective is to create multifunctional public spaces while making better use of strategically located MSRTC land.
The redevelopment plan also incorporates clean-energy and electric mobility infrastructure. Solar power systems, electric vehicle charging stations and dedicated charging facilities for MSRTC’s electric bus fleet have been proposed as part of the projects.
The initiative is intended to combine transport infrastructure with commercial and public-use facilities, potentially creating additional revenue streams for the state-run transport undertaking.
Shinde said the redevelopment would enable MSRTC to make more efficient and systematic use of its land assets while strengthening the corporation’s financial position. At the same time, modernised depots are expected to provide passengers with safer, higher-quality facilities.
The PPP model will allow private participation in developing the properties while retaining their broader public transport purpose. The first-phase rollout covering 147 locations is expected to mark a significant shift in how MSRTC’s land assets are planned and utilised.
