Students in Mumbai’s Parel-Shivdi area are set to get a new 10-storey municipal school building, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposing an estimated expenditure of Rs 78.57 crore for the project.
The proposed building will replace the old Saibaba Path Municipal School in the F-South ward, which was declared highly dangerous following a structural assessment by the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). The civic administration subsequently vacated the four-storey structure through its School Infrastructure Cell.
Around 977 students were enrolled at the school before the building was vacated. Following the demolition, students were shifted to Parmanand Municipal School and Lalbaug Municipal School. The school plot remained vacant for several years as the civic administration worked towards rebuilding the facility.
The BMC Education Department has now prepared a proposal seeking approval to construct a modern 10-storey school on the site. The estimated project cost is Rs 78 crore 57 lakh 32 thousand 185, and the proposal has been forwarded to the Standing Committee for consideration.
Five contractors participated in the tender process for the reconstruction work, following which the BMC selected M. Magoxy Infra Pvt. Ltd. for the project.
The contractor will be required to complete construction within 30 months from the commencement of work.
50 Classrooms And Modern Facilities
The proposed school has been planned as a modern educational facility with a wide range of amenities. The 10-storey structure will include 50 classrooms, along with dedicated spaces for academic, extracurricular and student-support activities.
The building will feature a computer room, library, staff room, physics and chemistry laboratories, a skill development centre and conference room. It will also include a medical room, yoga training centre, indoor sports activity centre, dance training centre, security guard room, dining room and gymnasium.
The redevelopment is expected to provide students with improved educational infrastructure while replacing the unsafe structure with a modern, purpose-built school facility. The final decision on the proposal will be taken at the upcoming Standing Committee meeting.
