The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inaugurated a new ground-plus-six-storey municipal school complex at Tilak Marg in Ghatkopar East, bringing four civic schools and 789 students under one roof.

The facility was inaugurated on Sunday in the presence of Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, local MLA Parag Shah, civic officials, students, parents and residents. The new building has been designed with modern educational infrastructure and facilities to support academic and extracurricular learning.

The complex currently houses Tilak Marg Hindi, Tilak Marg Marathi, Kamaraj Nagar Hindi and Kamaraj Nagar Marathi municipal schools. Together, they serve 789 students, including children enrolled in kindergarten.

The building has 38 classrooms, 25 smaller rooms, an auditorium and 14 additional rooms for various activities and services. An English-medium kindergarten has also been introduced at the facility.

Modern learning facilities

The school includes several specialised facilities, including computer and science laboratories, an astronomy laboratory, a library, a psychological therapy lab and a virtual classroom. Students from Kamaraj Nagar, Vikrant Circle, Ramabai Sahakar Nagar, Rajawadi, Netaji Nagar, Cheda Nagar, Garodia Nagar, Tilak Marg, Chembur and Vikhroli are expected to benefit from the complex.

Mayor Ritu Tawde said the facility would provide students with a positive learning environment. She also highlighted plans to facilitate educational visits for civic school students to institutions such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Tawde referred to initiatives including ‘Science Monday’ and ‘Math Thursday’, aimed at encouraging students to develop greater interest in science and mathematics. She also said 27 school-use items are being distributed free of cost to students in BMC schools.

Local MLA Parag Shah announced a personal contribution of Rs 5 lakh towards requirements at the school complex and stressed the importance of cleanliness, safety and quality education.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Education) Dr Prachi Jambhekar said the schools were shifted to the new premises in phases after construction was completed and the new academic year commenced.

The BMC said the project aims to strengthen municipal school infrastructure by bringing multiple schools and modern learning facilities together in a single complex.
