The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has become the first metro organisation in India to receive the latest ISO 55001:2024 certification for its Asset Management System for Mumbai Metro Line 3, marking a significant shift towards strategic and risk-based management of metro infrastructure.
The certification provides an internationally recognised framework for managing assets throughout their entire lifecycle. It enables organisations to balance operational performance, risks and lifecycle costs while ensuring that assets continue to deliver long-term value in line with organisational objectives, DMRC said.
According to the corporation, the certification represents a move away from conventional maintenance methods towards a more structured approach focused on asset performance, risk management, cost efficiency and long-term sustainability.
DMRC secured the certification after strengthening its existing asset management framework. The process included improvements to its Strategic Asset Management Plan and closer alignment of asset management targets with the organisation’s broader priorities.
The corporation also enhanced risk assessment procedures and lifecycle management controls while conducting training and capacity-building programmes for personnel involved in asset management. The system is being continuously evaluated through key performance indicators, audits and regular management reviews.
DMRC is responsible for operating and maintaining the 33.5-km Mumbai Metro Line 3, which connects Colaba, Bandra and SEEPZ. The underground corridor is supported by a wide range of critical infrastructure and equipment, including metro trains, traction systems, signalling, telecommunications, stations, lifts, escalators, tracks and civil structures.
The newly secured ISO certification is expected to strengthen the corporation’s approach to maintaining these assets while improving safety, reliability and operational efficiency.
By adopting the ISO 55001:2024 framework, DMRC aims to integrate asset performance, risk management and sustainability into its long-term operational strategy. The certification also establishes a globally benchmarked system for managing the infrastructure supporting Mumbai Metro Line 3.
The development comes as metro networks increasingly require sophisticated asset management systems to ensure that expensive infrastructure and equipment remain safe, reliable and efficient throughout their operational lives.
The certification is therefore expected to support DMRC’s efforts to maintain high standards of service while managing the long-term performance and value of Mumbai Metro Line 3’s extensive asset base.
