The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has moved another step closer to launching the first operational stretch of Metro 4 in Thane, with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) completing its inspection of the pit line on the 10.5-km Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction corridor.
The authority is now awaiting the CMRS safety report, which will determine whether any modifications or additional safety measures are required before the necessary approvals are granted.
The pit line has assumed greater significance as the Metro 4 car shed is yet to be completed. Until a fully operational depot is available, the facility will provide an interim arrangement for routine inspection and maintenance of metro rakes. It can be used to examine equipment located beneath trains, including wheels, braking systems, suspension and other technical components.
While additional metro lines are generally used for stabling trains, emergencies or moving rakes away from the main running line, the facility near Gaimukh will also support routine rake maintenance. The CMRS inspection specifically assessed whether the arrangement can be safely used for this purpose.
The 10.5-km corridor had earlier cleared testing by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in June. The tests covered train speed, signalling, safety systems, rolling stock and track-related equipment. With RDSO testing completed, the project has entered the final stage of safety scrutiny by the CMRS.
MMRDA expects to secure the required approvals and begin passenger services around Diwali or by the end of 2026, subject to the completion of the regulatory process.
Metro 4 and Metro 4A are part of the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Gaimukh corridor. The first operational section from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction will cover eight stations: Cadbury Junction, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Tikuji-ni-Wadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh.
The stretch is expected to provide an alternative public transport option for Thane commuters, particularly those travelling along the congested Ghodbunder Road corridor. Its commissioning will mark the beginning of Metro 4 operations while construction continues on the remaining sections.
