Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the state to become a USD 1 trillion economy, with infrastructure expansion, investment generation, affordable housing and improved connectivity forming key pillars of the plan.
Speaking at the ET Now Business Conclave and Awards in Mumbai, Shinde said Maharashtra was “not just participating” but is “leading India’s growth story”. He highlighted the state’s industrial ecosystem, skilled workforce and infrastructure as major drivers of its economic expansion.
Investment Push & Housing Target
Shinde highlighted investment commitments received by Maharashtra at the Davos Economic Forum. He said the state secured MoUs worth Rs 3 lakh crore during his first visit in 2022, followed by commitments of Rs 4 lakh crore on his second visit. Subsequent efforts generated proposals worth around Rs 10 lakh crore and Rs 12 lakh crore, he said.
Affordable housing was another key focus. Shinde said Mumbai needs around 12 lakh additional homes, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region requires nearly 20 lakh. The government has set a target of constructing 35 lakh homes for economically weaker and low-income groups by 2030.
“We want to make Mumbai slum-free,” he said, adding that cluster redevelopment would be used to transform slum pockets.
Mumbai Metro Network To Reach 500 Km
Shinde said approximately 337 km of metro network is currently being developed across Maharashtra, with the overall network expected to expand to 500 km in the future.
He also highlighted the state’s road infrastructure plans, including a proposed 5,000-km access-controlled road network. The Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Mumbai-Pune Missing Link were cited as major projects improving travel times and regional connectivity.
Mumbai 3.0 To Create High-Tech Urban Centre
Shinde said the government is also pursuing the Mumbai 3.0 vision, designed as a high-tech urban centre capable of attracting businesses, investors and residents from around the world.
The proposed development will incorporate concepts such as an edge city, medicity, aerocity and sports city, creating new economic and residential hubs around the Mumbai region.
The plans, he said, are intended to strengthen Maharashtra’s infrastructure, improve quality of life and position the state as a leading contributor to India’s economic growth.
