Maharashtra’s maritime infrastructure development is expected to gain momentum after the Centre responded positively to the state’s proposals under the Sagarmala 2.0 programme and agreed to consider revising passenger charges at Jetty No. 5 near Mumbai’s Gateway of India.
Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane raised several issues related to the state’s maritime sector during a meeting with Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi. According to the state government, the Centre has assured favourable action on the proposals.
Focus On Port-Led Development
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has submitted multiple projects under Sagarmala 2.0, covering port infrastructure, multimodal connectivity, coastal and inland waterways, maritime tourism and the economic development of communities living along the state’s coastline.
Rane urged the Union government to prioritise projects that meet the programme’s eligibility and feasibility requirements and approve the maximum possible number of proposals submitted by Maharashtra.
Officials said the Centre has responded positively and begun the required process for examining and advancing the projects.
The proposed investments are expected to improve maritime infrastructure across Maharashtra while strengthening links between ports, waterways and other modes of transportation. The projects could also support coastal tourism and create greater economic opportunities for communities dependent on the maritime sector.
Gateway Of India Jetty Charges Under Review
A key issue discussed during the meeting was the passenger fee charged at Jetty No. 5 near the Gateway of India. The state sought a review of the existing charges, with the move expected to make ferry travel more affordable for passengers.
The Centre’s willingness to examine the fee structure could benefit commuters and tourists using ferry services from one of Mumbai’s major waterfront transport hubs.
The developments come as Maharashtra seeks to expand its role in India’s maritime economy through better port connectivity, water-based transportation and tourism infrastructure. With the Centre considering the state’s proposals, Sagarmala 2.0 could provide additional impetus to several maritime projects across Maharashtra.
