The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has cleared four infrastructure proposals worth a combined Rs 24.43 crore to strengthen water distribution and sewage treatment facilities across the city. The decisions were unanimously approved at the corporation’s second general body meeting in August, chaired by Mayor Sujata Patil.
One of the major projects involves upgrading the water distribution network in Nerul village and adjoining areas covered under the gaothan expansion scheme. Residents and elected representatives had reported issues including inadequate supply, low pressure and water quality concerns.
A civic inspection found that population growth, narrow roads and uneven terrain had contributed to irregular water distribution. Ageing pipelines with insufficient diameters and leakage were also identified. The NMMC has approved Rs 2.14 crore to install larger-diameter pipelines at selected locations and extend the network to areas currently without adequate coverage.
In Ghansoli’s Siddharth Nagar, Rs 18.54 crore has been sanctioned to replace two ageing water reservoirs serving several nearby localities. The existing facilities include a 0.50 million-litre elevated reservoir and a 1 million-litre ground-level reservoir.
Built during the CIDCO era, both reservoirs have deteriorated and require frequent repairs. A structural audit conducted by IIT Powai classified them as dangerous. The project will involve dismantling the existing structures and constructing a new 1 million-litre elevated reservoir and 1.50 million-litre ground-level reservoir. The additional storage capacity is expected to support future population growth and provide more consistent water pressure.
The civic body has also approved Rs 1.90 crore for a sludge hygienisation plant at the 19 MLD sewage treatment facility in Belapur Sector 12. The project will receive funding through incentive assistance under the Union government’s ‘Jal Hi Amrut’ initiative under AMRUT 2.0.
NMMC’s seven sewage treatment plants have received five-star ratings, while the corporation has secured ₹40 crore in cumulative incentive assistance under the scheme.
Another Rs 1.85 crore has been approved for replacing machinery at the 30 MLD sewage treatment plant in Ghansoli Sector 15. The equipment is more than 15 years old and has reached its prescribed service life.
The upgrade is expected to improve plant efficiency and reduce electricity consumption while strengthening Navi Mumbai’s water and sewage infrastructure.
