The reconstruction of Mumbai’s 112-year-old Sion Bridge near Sion railway station is being accelerated, with Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde setting a target of September 30, 2026, for completion of the long-awaited project.
Tawde inspected the ongoing construction work and directed officials to expedite the remaining activities while maintaining high-quality finishing. The bridge, which had deteriorated over the years, was shut completely to vehicular traffic from August 1, 2024, after traffic police approval.
According to the original tender schedule, the bridge reconstruction was expected to be completed by February 2027. However, considering the inconvenience caused to residents and commuters, the Municipal Corporation and Central Railway are working towards completing the project several months earlier.
The reconstruction became necessary as part of the fifth and sixth railway line expansion between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla under MUTP-2. The old bridge was closed to facilitate the railway infrastructure work.
Construction Work Progresses
Central Railway is currently carrying out work on both girders of the new bridge, with concreting of the deck slabs completed. Work on the cash barrier and concrete wearing coat is now underway.
A new pedestrian bridge has also been completed and opened for public use, while demolition of the remaining section of the old bridge has been completed.
The project extends beyond the main bridge structure. Reconstruction of the approach road connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg to Sant Rohidas Marg in Dharavi is also underway.
The new pedestrian subway on LBS Marg was opened on February 20, 2026, while the renovated subway on Sant Rohidas Marg was scheduled to open to the public from July 14, 2026.
Mayor Seeks Greener, Better-Finished Bridge
During her inspection, Mayor Tawde instructed officials to meet the revised completion deadline without compromising on construction quality. She also suggested incorporating greenery into the project, including landscaped dividers and vertical gardens, to improve the appearance of the bridge and make the surrounding area more environmentally friendly.
The Sion Bridge reconstruction is expected to provide a safer and more modern crossing while improving connectivity around Sion station and easing movement for motorists and pedestrians.
Once completed, the upgraded bridge and its associated approach roads and pedestrian infrastructure are expected to improve accessibility for residents and commuters in Sion, Dharavi and surrounding areas.
