The Gaimukh-Payegaon Creek Bridge project in Thane has crossed a significant construction milestone, with overall progress reaching around 25% and piling work across the Thane Creek section exceeding 95%, according to an official project update.
Being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the 6.5-km bridge is expected to strengthen road connectivity between Thane, Bhiwandi, Vasai and other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The latest update said work on pier erection and pier-cap construction is progressing alongside activities at both ends of the project, including Gaimukh and Paye-Payegaon. The bridge is expected to create a new road connection across the creek and reduce pressure on existing routes.
Direct Route to Bhiwandi and Vasai
The proposed bridge will connect Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road with Chinchoti and Payegaon, providing a more direct route towards Bhiwandi, Vasai and northern parts of the MMR.
Ghodbunder Road is already a heavily used corridor carrying traffic between Thane, Mumbai’s western suburbs, Mira-Bhayandar and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. Traffic congestion is often worsened by heavy vehicles and the existing ghat section near Ghodbunder.
At present, motorists travelling from Thane towards Chinchoti, Payegaon and Vasai have to negotiate this section. The new creek bridge is expected to provide an alternative alignment, potentially reducing travel pressure on the existing route while improving movement for both passenger and freight traffic.
Link to Major Infrastructure Projects
The bridge is also planned as part of MMRDA’s broader multimodal transport network. It is expected to connect with major infrastructure corridors including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, Thane Coastal Road, Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, Diva-Vasai railway line, National Highway 48 and Anjur-Chinchoti Road.
The project is therefore being positioned as more than a standalone creek crossing, with its connections expected to strengthen regional mobility and improve access to emerging economic centres.
As construction advances, the Gaimukh-Payegaon bridge is expected to play an important role in easing road congestion around Thane and improving links between the eastern and western parts of the wider MMR.
With piling work nearing completion across the creek section, the project has moved further into its structural construction phase. Officials expect the completed corridor to support smoother commuter and freight movement while integrating with the region’s growing network of roads, railways, Metro corridors and other transport infrastructure.
