Mumbai Metro Allows Ganesh Idols During Ganeshotsav, But Size Limits Vary By Line

Mumbai Metro has allowed devotees to carry Ganesh idols during Ganeshotsav, providing a convenient travel option for passengers transporting idols. However, the permitted idol size differs across Metro corridors, and devotees have been advised to check the applicable rules before travelling.

On Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), operated by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), passengers can carry Ganesh idols up to 18 inches, or 45 centimetres, in height. The measurement will be taken from the base of the idol to its highest point.

The Metro 3 corridor, which runs between Cuffe Parade and Aarey-JVLR, has displayed instructions detailing the dos and don’ts for passengers travelling with Ganesh idols.

Three-Foot Limit on Several Metro Lines

For Metro lines operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), devotees can carry idols measuring up to three feet in height.

The provision applies to:

  • Metro Line 2A: Dahisar East to Andheri West
  • Metro Line 2B: Mankhurd to Chembur
  • Metro Line 7: Dahisar East to Gundavli
  • Metro Line 9: Dahisar East to Kashigaon

Accordingly, the idol-height limit is 18 inches on Metro Line 3, while idols of up to three feet are permitted on Lines 2A, 2B, 7 and 9.

Metro Line 1 Rules Yet to Be Clarified

Ganesh idols will also be permitted on Metro Line 1, which connects Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar. However, the operator has not yet specified the maximum idol height allowed on the corridor.

Metro authorities have urged devotees to ensure that carrying idols does not inconvenience other commuters, particularly during the busy festival period.

Passengers have also been reminded that flammable or explosive substances, dangerous goods, hazardous materials and other prohibited articles are strictly banned on Metro services.

With Ganeshotsav attracting large crowds across Mumbai, devotees travelling with idols are advised to verify the rules applicable to their particular Metro line and ensure that the idol complies with the prescribed size restrictions before starting their journey.
